[ferro-alloys.com]Altura Mining is already eyeing plans to double production at its new $151 million Pilgangoora lithium project, 90km south-east of Port Hedland.

The James Brown-led company officially opened the project yesterday, just 18 months after it began building the 220,000tpa mine.

The opening, attended by Mines Minister Bill Johnston, marks the latest milestone in WA’s booming lithium industry, which is set to help drive a global revolution in electric vehicles.

Altura produced first spodumene concentrate at Pilgangoora in July and trucked its first product to Port Hedland for export last month ahead of its first shipment to China later this month.

Chinese offtake customers Shaanxi J&R Optimum Energy and Lionergy are already contracted to accept 200,000tpa of concentrate from Pilgangoora until the end of 2022.

Altura’s product will be processed and converted into battery-grade lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide in China for use in the batteries that power electric vehicles.

Under the terms of the offtake deals, a price floor of $US550/t and a cap of $US950/t have been agreed to for the first three years of the contracts. Pilgangoora is expected to operate at average all-in cash costs of $A428/t over a 23-year mine life.

A final investment decision to double Pilgangoora’s capacity to 440,000tpa is expected before the end of the year.

Altura’s Pilgangoora project represents the other half of a deposit owned by Pilbara Minerals, which has also recently announced first concentrate production from its project of the same name.

Altura says it has employed about 1000 people at Pilgangoora since construction began and the mine will create 130 operational jobs.

Managing director James Brown said the company had been one of the early believers in the electric vehicle revolution but even it had been surprised by the speed of the growth in the lithium market.

He said the company had exceeded quality standards with the 6 per cent lithium concentrate it had produced to date.

Mr Johnston said five years ago, it would not be expected that a project like Pilgangoora would be so successful.

“The Altura story shows WA is the sort of place you can get things done,” he said.

The State Government has set up a Lithium and Energy Materials Taskforce in a bid to work with industry to capitalise on WA’s competitive advantage for producing and downstream processing of battery minerals.
