Desucatan, Senior Science Research Specialist from the Mine Safety Environment and Social Development Division of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau participated in the Capacity Enhancement Program of Mine Hazard Management for Sustainable Development in Seongnam and Wonju, South Korea on November 4-17, 2018, together with six (6) participating countries (Afghanistan, Gambia, Kyrgystan, Laos, Myanmar and Pakistan), sponsored by Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and hosted by Korea Mine Reclamation Corporation (MIRECO).

The program was designed to share Korea’s experience in the field of Mine Reclamation and to strengthen partnerships with the said participating countries in relation to its Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) which was formulated for a comprehensive and all-inclusive assistance strategy that ensures policy coherence/consistency and needs-based delivery for twenty-four (24) partnership countries.

The delegates participated in lectures on the different overseas projects of KOICA and MIRECO, Mine Hazard Management, Mine Reclamation technology and special mine reclamation policy conducted by KOICA and MIRECO personnel.

The delegates also attended the 6th International Symposium on Mine Reclamation held in Kangwonland Convention Hotel, Gangwon-do, South Korea on November 08-09, 2018, organized by MIRECO, Korean Society of Mineral and Energy Resources Engineers (KSMER) and Korean Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (KSRM).

Field visits to Hamtae Mine Active Water Treatment Facility, Samtan Art Mine, Taebaek Coal Museum Gwangmyeong Resource Recovery Facility, Up-Cycling Art Center, Gwangmyeong Cave, and The Smartium were conducted by the delegates. The history and culture of South Korea were also experienced by the delegates by visiting National Museum of Korean Contemporary History, National Folk Museum of Korea,

One of the major activities of the said program is the formulation of the Action Plan and Project Concept Paper for each of the participating country in relation to the CPS between KOICA, MIRECO and six (6) participating countries. “Philippine GIS-Based Modeling and Assessment of Mine-Induced Hazards” is the proposed Philippine PCP for the year 2019-2014 with a proposed budget of 5.484 Million USD.

With this program, participants were able to increase its capacities for the planning and implementation of various strategic policies and management policies regarding mine reclamation. The program also provided the participants with deep understanding of policy system of mine hazard management, comprehension on diverse mine hazards, and learning on mine reclamation technologies.
