[ferro-alloys.com]The Association of Polar Explorers is holding the “Arctic: Today and the Future” forum in St Petersburg on 5–7 December 2018. It is devoted to key development areas of Russia’s Arctic Zone and international cooperation in the region.

The forum will be attended by representatives of federal and regional authorities, heads of the Arctic Regions of Russia, public and environmental organisations, experts and scientists. Also invited are industry specialists and top managers from large industrial companies of the Polar Regions.

The Company is a long-standing participant of the forum. “By implementing large-scale and comprehensive projects in the Arctic, we contribute to bettering the welfare of the regions and ensure their sustainable development. We upgrade production facilities, create new infrastructure, and most importantly — we improve the environmental conditions. It is no wonder that Nornickel’s unique expertise is so valuable for most large dialogue platforms dedicated to the exploration of the Arctic Regions, and we are always happy to share it,” commented Vladislav Gasumyanov, State Secretary — Vice President of Government Relations at Nornickel.

In 2017, Nornickel commissioned a fibre optic communication line between Novy Urengoy and Norilsk, providing Taimyr residents with access to high-speed internet. The RUB 2.5 bn project was fully financed by the Company.

This year, jointly with the Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsiya), Nornickel completed renovation of Alykel Airport’s runway, having invested over RUB 5 bn out of RUB 12.5 bn of the project’s total funding.

In September 2018, the Company officially kicked off the Sulphur Project, Nornickel’s largest environmental initiative. Unique and socially important, it is set to become one of the main Fresh Air nationwide initiatives, forming part of the Environment national project. The Sulphur Project targets a 75% reduction in sulphur dioxide emissions in the Norilsk Industrial District by 2023 and is estimated to cost upwards of RUB 150 bn.

“Any of these projects can serve as a business model for our partners and colleagues in the Arctic Zone,” said Vladislav Gasumyanov.
