[Ferro-Alloys.com] German imports will be 16-30pc down on the year in 2020, according to importers' association VDKI.
Germany is likely to import 29.6mn-35.4mn t of hard coal this year, as coal-fired power generation is squeezed by renewables and fuel switching, VDKI managing director Franz-Josef Wodopia said. This would be down from 42.2mn t in 2019, which was itself 10pc lower on the year.
Germany's thermal coal imports — including anthracite — are expected to fall to 17.5mn-22.5mn t this year from 29.2mn t in 2019. Coking coal and coke imports are "a bit more difficult" to forecast, Wodopia said, but VDKI expects receipts to fall to 12.1mn-12.9mn t, against the association's 13.1mn t calculation for last year.
Russia last year extended its role as Germany's leading supplier, exporting 19.4mn t of hard coal, after sending 19.3mn t in 2018.
Eurostat data show net German thermal coal imports averaged 2.5mn t/month in 2018, 2.3mn t/month in 2019 and 1.4mn t/month in January-May 2020.
