Russia's reliance on metallurgical coal by major steelmakers means it will not be able to stop using coal as soon as possible, but companies are also actively trying to reduce carbon dioxide and achieve green steel production.
Yevlaz's current environmental strategic goal is that tons of steel carbon dioxide emissions do not exceed 2 tons (1.97 tons in 2019). Yevlaz is working towards higher goals and the company will announce a new environmental strategy later this year.
NLMK, which owns steel mills in Russia, the united states and Denmark and owns stakes in Belgium, France and Italy, plans to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions from steel to 1.91 tonnes by 2023, from 2 tonnes in 2018, by increasing energy efficiency, reducing carbon fuel consumption and promoting development of decarbonization technology.
In 2020, the Severstal group promised to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 3% by 2023 compared with 2020, and most of its emissions reduction projects will be implemented at its Chelebovets steel plant in northwest Russia.
