Indian private-sector producer Tata Steel has commenced a trial injection of hydrogen gas at its Jamshedpur steel plant in Jharkhand in a step towards decarbonising its operations.
The steelmaker has been trial-injecting 40pc of hydrogen gas in its E blast furnace at its 11mn t/yr Jamshedpur plant starting on 23 April for 4-5 days on a continuous basis. It is the first time ever that such a large quantity of hydrogen gas has been being continuously injected in a blast furnace, it said.
"As we explore the potential of greener fuel injectants we are excited to see the impact it can have on reducing fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions," said Tata Steel's vice-president of iron making Uttam Singh.
"We are confident that this trial will provide valuable insights into operating blast furnaces with hydrogen and help us identify the next steps towards achieving our goal of a leaner carbon future."
Tata Steel aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions from its Indian operations by 2045, while India aims to reach net-zero emissions by 2070.
The trial has the potential to reduce the coke rate by 10pc, translating into around 7-10pc reduction in CO2 emissions per ton of crude steel produced, Tata said. The company added it will also provide process control insight for pure hydrogen injection into the blast furnace.
The trial injection of hydrogen gas is part of the steelmaker's carbon direct avoidance approach, focusing on the blast furnace, while it also makes use of CO2 capture and use of 5 tonnes per day at its Jamshedpur plant in India in its pursuit of decarbonisation.
The steelmaker had earlier also conducted a trial of continuous coal bed methane injection in early 2022 at Jamshedpur.
Indian steel producers have previously asked for policy enablers from the government to fuel production and adoption of green steel in the country.
The Indian steel ministry earlier this month approved 13 task forces to define the roadmap for green steel, in a step towards lowering carbon emissions from the industry. argusmedia
